A Photo Project by Bob Allen
The National project came to me from an unexpected intersection of personal interests and random connections, or vice versa? The historical renovation of a building I've known all my life has become a time machine of sorts, and simultaniously, an unexpected education on the very tactile process of transformation.
The original building opened to the public in 1920 with much fanfare. In the spirit of modernization, the building received a facelift in 1970 as the facade was buried behind an odd mix of cast concrete, tinted glass and black stucco as was in vogue, somewhere... I was living in Bozeman with my family at that time. I don't remember the building prior to what it has looked like for 50 years of my life (above left). And I am not alone. For however many generations of Bozemanites, this weirdly out-of-place office building has stood at the intersection of Main and Black, no more, no less. Most of us of a certain age had NO idea there was a mostly unscathed, stately brick bank building still hidden beneath the veil. A true ugly duckling sitting there all these years. Image the collective suprise when this baby was unwrapped! (The backstory of how the stars aligned for this project requires a few beers...)
The National is a unicorn of challenges and opportunities for Scully West, the building's owner, and their team of dreamers, movers and shakers; the architects, planners, engineers, designers and pletora of construction professionals who are getting the WORK accomplished. Basically a reinforced concrete sturcture is being built inside a 100-year-old brick building that is up to seismic code and modern design standards - on a locaton that is one of the busiest intersections in downtown Bozeman. Slated for completion in 2024, the space will be home (again) to US Bank on the main floor, and office space on the remaining floors.
This website is part of an ongoing photo commission of the project's progress, updated monthly. It has become a proof-of-concept source of construction art as I seek the evolving details that are guided by the skilled hands of many. All photos, including the immersive and interactive 360° content, of which I am particularly proud, were shot on Nikon cameras. The resulting perspective allows a viewer to ananomiously examine a scene with a great depth of detail. And like the building itself, the resulting photos are a combination of old skills and modern technology. Please take a few minutes to explore the work. Thanks.
